S4C will air a Welsh language version of the celebrated children’s animation series The Smurfs, titled Y Smyrffs, this June. Dubbed by production company Cwmni Da, the series will be available on S4C, S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer.First broadcast on S4C in 1984, The Smurfs (Y Smyrffs) return in a new, high-energy 3D format. Based on the iconic characters created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo, this reboot captures the timeless charm of the original while reimagining it for a new generation of viewers. This updated series, consisting of 52 x eleven-minute episodes, is aimed at children aged 5 to 10. With enhanced animation and storytelling, it builds on the classic formula – emphasising friendship, teamwork, and humour. The main cast sees Dyfan Roberts voice Tada Smyrff (Papa Smurf); Betsan Ceiriog voice Smyrffen (Smurfette) and Tudur Owen voice Craca Hyll (Gargamel).Sioned Geraint, S4C’s Content Commissioner – Children and Learners, commented: “It’s many decades since Y Smyrffs were last on S4C and I’m delighted that we can re-introduce these wonderful characters to a new audience in 2025. It’s been a privilege to work together with Peyo Company to make this possible and to meet relatives of Pierre Culliford (Peyo); the man who created The Smurfs. It is thanks to their support for minority languages and S4C’s own ambitions that this new home for the Smurfs has been made possible, and I am very excited.”Véronique Culliford, President of the Peyo Company and the daughter of Pierre Culliford (aka Peyo), creator of The Smurfs, added: “I am very proud of this upcoming launch on S4C. The local languages approach has always been central for us and this new release in Welsh-language will be the 50th language release for our TV series! Kids and parents along can already expect a lot of fun watching Y Smyrffs on S4C. Mae’r Smyrffs yn ôl!”
