Super Gran star Gudrun Ure has died at the age of 98, with tributes pouring in for the beloved children's actress.

The Scots actress was best known for the 1980s children's TV series, based on the popular books by American author Forrest Wilson.

Her role as Granny Smith, who gains superpowers after accidentally being hit by an inventor's ray, gained her a legion of fans.

Tributes to the much-loved star have rolled in on social media, reading 'rest easy Super Gran x' and calling her 'legendary'.

Ms Ure's death at her London home was tonight confirmed by her niece Kate McNeill.

She said: 'She had a very memorable voice. I remember my husband was watching Casualty one night, and I went 'that's Gudrun' as soon as I heard the voice.'

Ms Ure was born on March 12, 1926 in Campsie, Stirlingshire, and had a career that spanned more than 50 years. She was married for over 40 years to John Ramsay, who died in 2008.
