TVB Europe: Channel 4 ‘exploring non-profit trust’ ownership

Story from TVB Europe:

Broadcaster Channel 4 is reportedly exploring the possibility that it could be acquired by a non-profit trust as an alternative to privatisation.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the broadcaster is in the early stages of talks about the possibility of raising money from foundations and charities. Should the talks progress any further, Channel 4 would need to raise hundreds of millions of pounds, added the report.

The idea of privatising Channel 4 was a key focus of former UK prime minister Boris Johnson and his culture secretary, Nadine Dorries.

When Liz Truss came into office, her culture secretary Michelle Donelan stated the government was “re-examining” the case for privatisation.

With the collapse of Truss’s administration, it remains to be seen what the future for the broadcaster holds.
