Advanced Television: Ofcom consults on satellite filings

Story from Advanced Television:

UK comms regulator Ofcom is consulting on proposed updates to its satellite filings procedures, which are the processes for obtaining internationally recognised orbits and frequency assignments for satellites.

Before a satellite can use the radio spectrum and orbits it needs, it requires an associated ‘satellite filing’ to obtain international recognition of these resources through the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Ofcom submits and manages all satellite filings to the ITU on behalf of organisations registered in the UK, the British Overseas Territories, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

Ofcom is proposing to update its procedures to reflect changes in international rules, which we do periodically. Separately, it is also proposing several updates which should provide greater clarity around existing processes. It has also taken into account the recommendations of the UK Government’s Space Regulatory Review.

Ofcom welcomes any feedback on its consultation by May 23rd 2025.
