Starting today, Apple TV+ is joining Amazon’s Prime Video Channels in the UK, marking a big shift for Apple as it steps outside its usual walled garden. The service arrives two months after its US launch on Prime Video, letting UK viewers watch hit shows like Ted Lasso and Slow Horses through Amazon’s platform.Prime Video customers can now subscribe to Apple TV+ for £8.99/month – the same price you’d pay directly through Apple. But here’s the thing: if you’re already subscribed to Apple TV+ directly, those login details won’t work on Prime Video (and vice versa). Like other Prime Video channels, the subscriptions are completely separate. The Prime Video integration does have some clear benefits though, especially if you use devices that don’t typically get along with Apple’s own app. Android phone and tablet users, this one’s particularly good news for you.Apple’s streaming service takes a different approach to streaming compared to Netflix or Disney+.Instead of offering thousands of older shows and movies, it focuses purely on original content. While that means a smaller library, the quality is consistently impressive – just look at shows like Slow Horses starring Gary Oldman, The Morning Show, and critically acclaimed sci-fi epics like Severance, Foundation and Silo.Sports fans get something too – the service includes select Major League Soccer matches (yes, soccer, since it’s an American league) and Friday Night Baseball double-headers, available on Fridays. For those new to the concept, Prime Video Channels is Amazon’s way of letting Prime members add extra paid streaming services to their existing Prime Video account. 11-The idea is simple: instead of juggling multiple apps and subscriptions, you can watch everything through Prime Video and its apps. The service works on an à la carte basis – you pick and choose exactly which channels you want, with no long-term commitments.Once subscribed, you can watch your chosen channels directly through the Prime Video app on pretty much any device – smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, streaming sticks, and gaming consoles. One of the big advantages is flexibility – you can cancel any channel subscription whenever you want, which is particularly handy for services you might only want seasonally. It also means one billing relationship and one app to manage everything. There is one important requirement though: you need an Amazon Prime subscription first (or just Prime Video) before you can add any channels. If you’re new to Prime, you can try it with a 30-day free trial.“Prime Video has become a first-stop entertainment destination for our UK viewers,” says Chris Bird, Managing Director of Prime Video UK, noting that Apple TV+ joins over 65 other streaming subscriptions on the platform. These range from major services like Paramount+, MGM+ and hayu, to more specialised offerings.Apple’s own Eddy Cue, SVP of Services, explains their motivation: “We want to make Apple TV+ and its award-winning library of series and films available to as many people as possible” – quite a change from Apple’s traditionally closed ecosystem approach. If you’re happily watching Apple TV+ through the Apple TV app already, there’s no real reason to change – you’ll get the same content for the same money. It’s also worth noting that over the years, there have been quite a few ways to get Apple TV+ for free. For example, if you buy a new iOS device (iPhone, iPad etc.), you can get 3 free months, and other companies (such as Roku, Currys, Sky and others) often offer free Apple TV+ months as well. These free months, however, would not be relevant to a Prime Video subscription – so that’s something to consider. On Prime Video, you simply get the default 7-day free trial for Apple TV+ if you’re a new subscriber. But if you’ve been frustrated by device compatibility issues, or just prefer having all your streaming services in one place, the Prime Video option makes a lot of sense.
