The BBC is to spend the coming weeks setting out the principles that it believes should apply to a future funding model.During today’s Annual Report press briefing, DG Tim Davie revealed a future funding model is expected over the summer. Also expected in the coming week is the BBC’s principles for a future funding model.Davie hinted at what some of these principles might be, stating that they will involve “independence for the BBC,” “offering value to the license fee payer” and “ensuring that there is benefit for the UK’s creative industries.”A review into potentially scrapping the license fee in 2027 was due over the next two weeks but will very likely be delayed following the resignation of Boris Johnson, and some have quietly raised hopes that it could be dropped full stop.Davie said he has spoken with government representatives about “day to day business” since Johnson resigned but “it is too early for us to speculate what will happen with the [future of the BBC after the Tory leadership] election.”During the same press briefing, BBC Chair Richard Sharp claimed there is a risk of “putting the funding model first and only later discovering what kind of BBC that creates,” warning of “unintended consequences following the “disappointing and harmful effects” of the current two-year license fee freeze. The comments chimed with those made by Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon recently, who spoke of “unintended consequences” that may arise from the government’s move to privatize the channel.
